about

This album almost didn't happen. It was recorded while I was practicing and working to construct a generative synthesizer patch. I recorded it mainly so I could check for levels and listen back to discover which techniques worked effectively. When I saw that it was a 90-minute session, I nearly deleted it, but decided I would save it and listen to what I'd come up with.

Surprisingly, not only did I like the sounds, but the recording actually had what I found a somewhat enchanting form. Overall, listening to it in its entirety was quite a satisfying experience. I found myself returning to it several times, just for pure enjoyment. I think it may be my favorite among all the live electronic recordings I've made.

Everything was recorded live to a stereo mixer and recorded with GarageBand. No multi-tracking or editing was used. Because of the file size, I had to separate it into 3 separate tracks, which is okay, because it does feel to me like the piece has three fairly distinct sections, almost like movements. Completely unintentional, but there it is.

The album is dedicated to American composer Morton Feldman (1926-1987). Feldman's use of time space in long, slowly developing works such as "Piano and String Quartet" and "For Bonita Marcus", each over an hour in length, have been affecting my music for the past few years. I've found creating generative synthesizer music that imitates Feldman's late style a rewarding challenge.
